Heroes Awakens the Beast within

Last night, Feh Channel gave us a decent look at what’s to come in our favorite mobile gotcha game soon enough.

August is going to be full of opportunities to get free orbs for summoning and a collection of skill-based banners from 2017 will be returning for one day rotations — with a free summon each time.

Another version update will be coming soon with upgrades to the weapons of the original three Order of Heroes members. There’s also going to be updates to the Arena and the Grand Conquest game modes.

There’s also going to be a brand new game mode coming soon based on building friendship with new units in exchange for rewards and accessories using RNG-based treasure drops.

All sorts of fancy, nice little things… That I’m not going to talk about right now.

The major updates and new game mode will probably warrant their own posts down the line (shout out to easy post material). So today I’m simply going to focus on one thing:

New heroes coming in from Fire Emblem Awakening.


SumiaMaid of Flowers

Skill Set:

  • Reprisal Lance (Might = 14 / Range = 1)
    • If foe initiates combat, grants Attack +6 during combat.
  • Reposition (Range = 1)
    • Target ally moves to opposite side of unit.
  • Close Defense (A Skill)
    • If foe initiates combat and uses a sword, lance, axe or dragonstone, grants Defense and Resistance +6 during combat.
  • Attack/Defense Link (B Skill)
    • If a movement Assist skill is used by unit or targets unit, grants Attack and Defense +6 to unit and target ally or unit and targeting ally for one turn.

Analysis:

Out of all the characters introduced on this banner, Sumia is probably my favorite as far as their actual original game personalities go. She was an interesting case in that she was clearly implied to be Chrom’s canonical love interest despite the game leaving his romance options open to player interests. I fell pretty hard for her pie-based shenanigans as well though, so I can understand where he’s coming from.

In Heroes she’s also built with an interesting set of skills. Essentially the developers have made her an enemy phase unit who can gain +6 Attack, Defense and Resistance when struck by any close-range weapon. Plus she comes with the best movement Assist skill built-in to be used with that Link, so there’s almost no downsides.

Assuming her stats are decent, anyway.

Honestly I don’t have much more to say. She’s probably my favorite of the four here and the one I’d want to summon. It’s just too bad I have a +9 Cordelia that will presumably continue to overshadow her.


LibraFetching Friar

Skill Set:

  • Wo Gùn (Might = 13 / Range = 1)
    • Deals +10 damage when Special Attack triggers.
  • Noontime (Cooldown = 2)
    • Restores Health = 30 percent of damage dealt.
  • Renewal (B Skill)
    • At the start of every second turn, restores 10 Health.
  • Spur Attack/Resistance (C Skill)
    • Grants Attack and Resistance +3 to adjacent allies during combat.

Analysis:

If Sumia was an interesting case in Fire Emblem Awakening that stuck in my mind, Libra was the opposite. Unless you dig deep into a few specific support conversations (something I only found out about later), he’s essentially one-note. He looks like a girl and that causes a lot of confusion amongst various members.

So yeah, while he also has deep-rooted familial pain and all that jazz, I just never got too interested in the guy. By the time I hit his mission in my original play through, I already had Lissa as a solid War Cleric, and he was clearly outmatched by the other recruitable unit in that mission: Tharja.

Some competition, huh?

This version of Libra stands a little higher as far as my intrigue is concerned, but that’s almost purely for his weapon. Having a Wo Dao for axes is a cool idea. Especially when that axe is also a GUN.

Editor’s Note:

I know it’s not really a gun. That’s called jokes, everyone.

Beyond that, he seems to be built to survive. Healing when he triggers that Special Attack and healing every other turn. Perhaps he’ll be a pretty bulky green infantry unit, which is something we don’t have as far as I’m aware.

Or perhaps he’ll just pull out a gun and win every battle.


MaribelleDire Damsel

Skill Set:

  • Trilemma (Might = 12 / Range = 2)
    • After combat, if unit attacked, inflicts the following status on target and foes within two spaces of target through their next actions: “If unit has weapon-triangle advantage, boosts Attack by 20 percent. If unit has weapon-triangle disadvantage, reduces Attack by 20 percent.”
  • Martyr (Range = 1)
    • Restores Health = damage dealt to unit plus 50 percent of Attack (minimum of seven Health). Restores Health to unit = half damage dealt to unit.
  • Miracle (Cooldown = 5)
    • If unit’s Health > one and foe would reduce unit’s Health to zero, unit survives with one Health.
  • Dazzling Staff (B Skill)
    • Foe cannot counterattack
  • Staff Valor (C Skill)
    • While unit lives, all staff allies on team get 2x Skill Points after combat or after using healing Assist skills (only highest value applied, does not stack).

Analysis:

So… Maribelle is a little strange here.

In her original appearance she was a stuffy noblewoman who ran around the battlefield healing units and trying to get everyone to act more professional.

In this game she… Inflicts Triangle Adept on opponents, can’t be hit back when she strikes, heals herself when she restores Health and sometimes doesn’t die. Also she boosts the amount of Skill Points other healers get.

I’m sorry, what is Maribelle supposed to be exactly? Is she an attacking healer or a healing healer?

What kind of weird staff ability is inflicting Triangle Adept? If anything that’s super counterintuitive, as it gives the opponent an advantage more than it does offer your units an advantage in most situations.

I don’t know, man. Presumably she’ll be okay considering how good of a record cavalier healers have, but I’m just not sure I see the through-line.


OliviaSky-High Dancer

Skill Set:

  • Skuld (Might = 16 / Range = 1)
    • If Sing or Dance is used, grants Attack, Speed, Defense and Resistance +3 to target.
  • Dance (Range = 1)
    • Grants another action to target ally (cannot target another ally with Sing or Dance).
  • Bracing Stance (A Skill)
    • If foe initiates combat, grants Defense and Resistance +4 during combat.
  • Chill Speed (B Skill)
    • At start of turn, inflicts Speed -7 on foe on the enemy team with the highest Speed through its next action.
  • Guidance (C Skill)
    • Infantry and armored allies within two spaces can move to a space adjacent to unit.

Analysis:

Alright here we go. The controversial one.

I’ve made my issue with alternate units in main summoning banners more than apparent in the past. I’m still not a fan, and Olivia is unfortunately not enough of a beloved unit (to me at least) to justify interest.

She’s got a good weapon, much like Performing Arts Azura but with a sword instead of an axe. She also has a decent enough skill set, despite it being a bit more on the defensive than offensive side — something I’m not sure fits well with a flying unit.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just bitter about the whole thing, but I feel like there were a billion other units we could have introduced outside of a third dancing Olivia variant.

Why not Ricken? He was introduced alongside Maribelle in-game, so that would make sense. Or perhaps Miriel or Kellam as fellow original members of the Shepherds alongside Sumia?

Hell I’ll even take Vaike and screw Libra over in the summoning pool. That’s saying something, because nobody likes Vaike!

Maybe if I summon Olivia I’ll sing a different tune. But for now I’m kind of internally boycotting her. Hinoka was my one true alternate art love.


All things being equal, I think I’ve covered all of my thoughts in the analysis sections here.

Sumia is my favorite top summon for this banner, with everyone else kind of middling into obscurity for various reasons.

At least Walmart is coming and he looks pretty wicked.

Also my computer just autocorrected ‘Walhart’ to ‘Walmart’ and I’m sticking with it because that’s hilarious.

I’ve been saving my orbs for a little while following some lucky summoning on the Sketchy Summer banner (shout out to my perfect IV Summer Tiki), so I’m starting out with more than 100. Considering my lack of interest in the banner overall I might just summon a little on this banner and either save up for later or go back to try to get Camilla for the memes.

But that’s a discussion I’ll have with my wallet for later. Because that summoning addiction is something strong, so let’s see what fruits these trees have born.

Glad to know my luck has finally run out on me.

But hey I got three lance pegasus knights and Chrom so… Maybe that’s a good omen for Sumia?

Probably not, I’m not sure. Either way I won’t be spending too much time on this banner like I said. So we’ll see how that goes.

In the meantime, let’s see what that story is all about, shall we?

This chapter picks up directly where the last left off — something that I suppose should just be assumed, but I figure is worth mentioning anyway. As a segue if nothing else.

After being demolished by the incredible power of a self-reviving King Surtr (and taking a few vacations at the beach of course) the Order of Heroes is hoping to escape the fires of Múspell.

It comes to their attention that troops are pursuing from all sides except the east. Seems as though a second force is out in that direction also trying to escape.

So naturally the Order elects to follow along under the age-old adage that the enemy of their enemy must be their friend.

Unfortunately they don’t have the foresight of seeing the name of the chapter to know that Múspell’s forces are pursuing the Prince of Ice, Hríd.

After all, it wouldn’t be a complete story if there wasn’t a character everyone assumed was dead coming in to make a significant impact in the story.

He tells the Order that he was contacted by a masked man calling himself Zacharias, who provided him with the information needed to know just how to stop the Rite of Flame and kill Surtr once and for all.

Of course we the audience already knew there was a location where sacrifices are made considering that’s where we last heard Princess Veronica was being sent, but now our protagonists have a location and a heaping helping of hope.

Speaking of, can I just take a moment to reflect on the fact that somehow Múspell is still forming contracts with heroes of the week despite locking up the one character who can do that with the intent to kill her?

Because I’m not over that.

But it’s also a tangent for another day.

From this point the story seems to continue as expected. Sumia arrives first and offers a quippy character quirk to start her map.

Then… Intelligent Systems kind of throws a curveball and unexpectedly interjects more story into the second story map.

Laegjarn and Laevatein reveal that they apparently saved Helbindi’s life after his defeat by your hands when entering Múspell.

However, they also reveal that he’s caught between a rock and a hard place. If he goes back to Surtr and reveals he lost, he’ll be killed. As will his sister. So the flame sisters offer him the chance to join them and win his family’s safety by finally defeating the Order.

So that’s just what he does starting in the next map:

Which, by the way, proved to me how silly Maribelle’s staff was after she buffed my Tiki and made it easier for her to defeat Helbindi. Just saying.

As the Order continues on, they go to a path that’s supposedly little known by Surtr’s forces called Burnt-Bone Gorge.

With a name as metal as that I can’t imagine how they wouldn’t know about it, but that’s plot convenience for ya.

Especially since, as it turns out, they do actually know about the path and are waiting in ambush.

Defeat the final map and the Order is able to break through and escape once again, leading them to question exactly how they got stuck in this situation in the first place.

Feh Plot Meme

The discussion on there being a traitor with the generic back-and-forth of “there can’t be a traitor” and “there must be a traitor” goes on for a long time because none of the members of the Order are willing to believe their old friend is evil. Again.

So I could go on and show everything… But I won’t. Because it’s kind of ridiculous when you consider all the evidence.

All of the evidence being that Múspell having a gOD DAMN SHAPESHIFTER ON THEIR TEAM.

Yeah that’s right. Why is anyone on the Order questioning whether there’s a mole like this is some Cold War drama.

Obviously someone somewhere is just Loki fucking around with everyone. Everyone’s seen her do it before so it shouldn’t be a surprise.

The way I see it there are four possibilities.

  1. The littlest Nifl princess is Loki, as fan theories have guessed for a while.
  2. Zacharias is Loki, because he told them exactly where to go to get ambushed.
  3. Mr. Big Bad Ice Prince is Loki, sent out to be a distraction.
  4. Or hey, maybe all of them are Loki. Maybe every character is Loki, because that’s the kind of plot convenience you can abuse when you introDUCE A SHAPESHIFTER INTO YOUR GAME GUYS COME ON!

I don’t know why this point annoys me so much. If anything it’s arguably good writing to make people guess who’s actually the real faker.

I just wish they didn’t have that intrigue while also having the main heroes be ignorant morons about it, introducing an entire extra layer of bullshit that’s not needed.

But rant aside, that’s where the story cuts off. Come back next time to see the end of the Rite of Flame, presumably.

As usual I suppose I should end off asking you, the audience, some questions I’ll never have answered.

Alright so I know I cued outro music already, but I have to keep you here a little bit longer folks.

See, as I was putting finishing touches on this post, I also happened to complete the main story missions and earn all of the extra orbs.

Using those orbs I attempted to summon again, the first summon following that fivesome I posted earlier.

As it turns out, those pegasi and Chrom actually WERE a good omen, because my first attempt scored me this:

Which I guess means… I basically don’t have to summon anymore on this banner if I don’t want.

Which, by extension, means I get to save up some orbs. Shout out to the ever-growing stockpile.

Fire Emblem Heroes: Genealogy of the characters I don’t know

I think the title of this one basically says all that needs to be said.

Hey everybody, welcome to another long-winded Fire Emblem Heroes update post here on Jason’s blog. Normally I’d start off this kind of post with a whimsical affirmation that things definitely won’t be as relentlessly wordy as before… But considering how many times that particular mindset has backfired in hindsight, I’m just going to skip over all that and go straight into the meat of things.

That cool with all of you? I sure hope so, because when I’m typing this I’m literally the only person that can answer that question.

Today’s update brings us heroes from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. As a Japanese-exclusive title in any official release, I haven’t personally played the game in any capacity, since I don’t tend to play with emulators all that often. Hell, I haven’t even seen any let’s plays of this game floating around in any of my usual Youtube channels.

Because of that, I have no experience with any of the characters in the game and no personal connections whatsoever. The best I could figure just from the initial teaser video was that two of the characters seemed to be related to two heroes we already have in the mobile game, but even then they’re units I’ve never used.

So that was a load of help.

As there’s only three of them, at least it makes it easier on me to do some basic research so I can pull together these small character bios like I enjoy to do.

  • TailtiuThunder Noble
    • A noble from the House Friege, where the greatly abused powerhouse Reinhardt and his sister Olwen also hail, Tailtiu is a bubbly girl known for her protective personality and strong thunder magic. Really that’s about all the wiki expands upon for the most part, aside from a horrifically tragic part of her life where she endures torture and depression to protect her young children, only to die from said depression and torture. Yeah, that’s one of the most definitive portions of her story arc. I’m actually getting sad and emotional over this character I don’t know at all because of it, too. I suppose if nothing else that encourages me to go after her when I start summoning on this banner, despite the fact that her initial build is a little ‘meh’ just looking at the list. Blarblade is always great for accumulating extra damage with more stat buffs, but otherwise everything else is basic stat-related stuff: +2 attack and resistance, rallying +3 speed and resistance on an ally and grinding +3 speed to nearby allies during combat. If nothing else, seems like she’ll be helpful in letting her teammates attack twice more often.
  • DeirdreLady of the Forest
    • Deirdre is a women from the Spirit Forest with the holy blood of the dragon Naga and a curiosity for the outside world after an isolated upbringing. She comes to marry Sigurd, with whom she conceives Seliph, and after her husband’s death she begets Julia and Julius with a man named Arvis. Her weapon, Divine Naga, stands out much like her daughter Julia’s as a green tome effective against dragons that also nullifies stat bonuses from certain skills during combat. With the popularity of teams themed around things like cavalry units, this is a pretty useful weapon to have around. She also comes with the somewhat situational Ardent Sacrifice, Quick Riposte to make automatic follow-ups and Speed Ploy to lower the speed of units in cardinal directions with lower resistance than she has.
  • SigurdHoly Knight
    • Apparently the protagonist for the first generation story in Genealogy of the Holy War, Sigurd is a mounted lord that uses swords and lances. He has quite literally a billion relatives, though the most notable ones here for this description are his wife Deirdre and son Seliph, who has to clear his father’s name after he’s killed and labeled a traitor. Sigurd uses the legendary Divine Tyrfing, a sword that grants him +3 resistance and makes it so he receives half damage from every first magic attack used against him. Like the Brave Heroes Lyn and Ike, he also comes with four extra skills rather than three: His special skill is Miracle, which lets him survive a lethal attack, he has Close Defense to give him +6 defense and resistance when attacked by a close range weapon, he has Speed Smoke to inflict -7 speed on enemies within 2 spaces of each attack he deals and finally he has a new ability called Crusader’s Ward that reduces damage from the second attack onward by 80 percent if attacked from two spaces away. From what I understand, word is going around that Sigurd could be a perfect anti-meta unit by essentially nullifying most damage from magic attacks all together… And I can’t argue that this sounds pretty overpowered. I’ll look forward to seeing it in action.

One thing I’ve come to find from researching these three is that Genealogy apparently had an absurdly huge cast of characters that intertwined in a billion different ways. I’ll be honest, for this being such an older game in the series, I’m pretty impressed. It apparently featured a multi-generational split story system, which is something I believed was a more recent phenomenon.

Even if 99 percent of what I read also suggested that this entire game is just a deep dive into depressing character arcs… I’m still impressed.

Frankly, reading about Tailtiu made me really, REALLY feel for her character, and it makes me want to summon and use her in combat. On top of that, Sigurd does seem like he’ll shake things up quite aggressively and Deirdre could be pretty fun with that special Divine Naga tome. All three seem pretty worth summoning, so I’ll probably work at getting at least one of them now that I’m done torturing myself trying to summon Performance Arts Olivia.

For context: I got to about a 4.75 percent chance of finding a 5 star in the Performance Arts summoning focus banner, and during the first round of summoning that I didn’t have a colorless orb to choose from, Inigo broke my streak of trying to find his mother Olivia.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Inigo so I’m not that mad… But it did suck that all of that effort to aim for one unit wound up getting blown away in an instant.


Editor’s Note Part 2: 

So this wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but I’m going to have to put another aside here because… Well…

Turns out my decision to stop summoning on the Performance banner was actually a good idea.

Seriously this was not at all what I expected to happen, but I drew Sigurd on my second orb – with the first orb being a freebie to begin with. It’s quite possibly the quickest, luckiest unit grab I’ve ever gotten, and luckily it seems to be with the guy who will probably be the most powerful of the bunch.

I’m going to take it as a good sign and keep summoning for a while to hopefully get Tailtiu. Wish me luck!


As far as additional story goes with these new characters, most of the underlying stuff is par for the course. Three Paralogue levels, three difficulty settings and some extra missions to give players a total of 12 orbs to obtain.

When you get into the actual story itself, it seems as though Intelligent Systems is using this Paralogue to begin building up to whatever large-scale event they have coming down the line. Though… At first things certainly don’t seem that way.

The arc begins with Veronica commanding an armored knight, Arden, to come fight alongside our main man Sigurd.

Once you make it through the fight, Arden is let go and gears quickly shift over to round 2, where there’s more of a surprise visitor making an appearance.

That’s right, the evil shapeshifting trickster god Loki, who some time ago decided to masquerade as Anna for some reason, is taking more of a front line approach by helping Veronica command units to go to battle.

Though, by commanding them, I suppose I should say blackmailing them.

Yeah… There tends to be a pretty big dichotomy between some units happily helping the bad guys while others need to be forced in some way. Like promising to send them home only if they fight and win. Which is pretty scummy, let’s be honest.

But anyway, after battling against Ayra and Tailtiu, you move on to the final encounter. Before getting there however, things once again shift pretty dramatically into a much more suddenly emotional bit of character development.

This game was already playing the “villains aren’t actually so bad because things are going on beyond their control” card by developing Prince Bruno/Zacharias’ backstory as much as it has been the last few story missions, but it’s easy to tell that we’re really banking on the sympathy to hit hard this time around given how Veronica sounds more like a confused child than ever before.

Oh, and there’s the whole evil trickster god influence underlying everything as well, but we’ll actually get into that in a minute.

First things first, Veronica is somewhat consoled by Deirdre, who seems to share the same pain as one with divine blood.

While things are perhaps being laid on a little thick for my tastes, I can always appreciate taking that humanizing approach to a character who seemed so utterly ruthless at one point or another. Though I will credit my boy Seth from Sacred Stones for getting that train rolling, because I’m sure he deserves is.

Once the final fight is out of the way, you’re once again treated to what is essentially a ‘congratulations’ screen as Sigurd and Deirdre thank you for freeing them from the contract and letting them go off to be happy together forever. So on and so forth. Nothing we’ve never seen before, honestly.

But then there’s something like a post-credits scene hinting at more to come:

Whatever the developers have been building up to for some time now, it seems we’re finally getting to a point where all of these plot threads are going to reveal what they’ve been leading up to. Loki appears to quite literally be opening the way to Asgard, looking to bring an army to the world of Askr to destroy it. Or just to destroy everything. Who knows, really.

The whole thing is frankly a hell of a lot more like an actual Marvel end credit scene than I think anyone was intending, but you won’t see me complaining.

I’m honestly really looking forward to seeing whatever comes out of this, and it makes me glad that I didn’t succumb to that slump I was feeling a few weeks back that almost had me drop the game for a while.

Once again, my lack of experience with the original game doesn’t give me much to talk about as far as remembering what locales these little maps are mimicking or even having some sort of a nostalgia trip over the music. On top of that, I’d argue these maps were some of the easiest to blow through and earn all the available orbs in my recent memory.

But I did want to bring up the maps as a separate idea because I thought it was  interesting that, once again, a few of the maps introduce us to more characters we’re going to see become relevant in the near future:

As these two are not a part of the summoning focus, that begs the question of whether we’re going to see them show up in some sort of a Grand Hero Battle, or whether we should be expecting a new Tempest Trials sometime soon with a Genealogy theme.

I suppose only time will tell… But if I were a betting man, I’d vote for the latter.


Well, that should do it for now I think, seems as though I’ve bled this particular topic thread dry. And this time I came in at… Approximately 2,000 words.

Perhaps jinxing myself at the beginning of the post wasn’t the problem. Perhaps I’m just pathetic and compulsively write too much about everything. Hell, I wrote a 900 word story about the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga remake for my school paper just today, and that’s just a drop in the bucket compared to the extended version I’m planning on posting around here soon.

But I digress, since obviously going off on small rambling fits like this is exactly how I get to be this long-winded in the first place. Hopefully you all enjoyed my thoughts and observations no matter how long they were!

A Radiant Fire Emblem Heroes update

As I’ve come to find, there’s never a better opportunity to be productive with some Fire Emblem than when you’re just sitting around biding time.

Unlike most of my Heroes update posts, this one is not being written during the witching hours between midnight and 3 a.m. Though it feels a little wrong in that sense and the post itself won’t go out at my usual early-ish morning time, I can’t really complain about feeling a little bit more well-rested as I talk about these new heroes:

It seems a bit strange that a more substantial update like this got a banner with only three heroes, but from the perspective of trying to summon them all I suppose it’s hard to argue with a little more ease in that department.

I’m sure I’ve brought this up in the past, but the Radiant games (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance respectively) are part of the legendary RPG series’ history that I personally haven’t touched. While I don’t really have much of a personal connection with the three new heroes that were added as a result, I do still have some first impressions I can give.

  • ElinciaLost Princess
    • Princess and, from what I understand, later queen of Crimea. Elincia is a Pegasus knight who uses a sword called Amiti that reduces her speed in exchange for attacking twice when she initiates combat (though with less of a reduction than an average brave weapon). She has Ardent Sacrifice as a passive skill to heal her allies, Death Blow to boost her attack by 6 as a way of making up for her sword’s low base power and a new skill called Flier Formation which seems to work like a reverse of Tana’s skill, allowing her to teleport to nearby flying units.
  • OscarAgile Horseman
    • A cavalier from Crimea who joined Ike’s Greil Mercenaries and is apparently known for his speed. Out of everyone here, I would argue Oscar carries the least amount go gravitas in terms of what he gets out of the box. A Sapphire Lance makes him capable enough as a weapon-triangle abuser, he can grant +3 speed and defense with his assist ability, he has Lancebreaker to combat other lance users and he grants an extra passive +3 Speed and Defense boost to adjacent units during combat. An interesting and worthy set of buffs, but nothing that seems too mind-blowing.
  • NepheneeFierce Halberdier
    • Coming in with arguably the strangest name of the bunch is Nephenee, a commoner from Crimea who still seems to carry somewhat of a drawl from her native home despite trying her best to talk more in-line with the royalty under which she serves. As an infantry unit, Nephenee comes with a Slaying Lance to lower the special cooldown of her Moonbow special attack (quite the deadly combination, I might add), a +2 attack/speed boost  and a new skill called Wrath that accelerates special cooldown more and boosts the power of a special attack when she’s below 75% health. If her stat spread is good, she’s probably going to have incredible damage output.

Elincia has stood out to me most thus far, as a sword-wielding Pegasus knight is something I’m still looking to add to my flying unit team alongside Minerva and Cordelia. Plus it’s cute that her Pegasus has a unicorn horn, and I’m always a sucker for cute design choices.

The game seems to have had other plans for me, however. While my free summon was a four-star Palla (Also known as not the sword user Pegasus knight I wanted), I decided to use a couple of extra orbs considering the Tempest Trials Mini and other daily events have given me a 100+ orb surplus.

This craziness was enough to outright blow me away when it happened. It kind of said to me that somebody somewhere is looking out to prove that games can be nice to their players. Once in a while, at least.

Seriously, three five stars in general at once is insane, but having Innes from the Sacred Stones banner and Nephenee from the new Path of Radiance banner show up for me is all kinds of extra nuts just from being so recently relevant.

Sure, it’ll be a bit of a slog to raise all three of them up to their full glory, but in the end I’m sure it will be a worth-while venture. The more good five stars I have, the easier it becomes to tackle things with continuous fights under changing conditions like the Arena Assault game.


With that slight bit of self-serving feel-goodness out of the way, let’s get into the nitty gritty of what we got to surround this new summoning focus banner.

The Radiant series seems to be an ever-popular one in the Fire Emblem fandom, and Heroes has no qualms about using that popularity to push bigger elements in its ever evolving story by the looks of it.

The Dauntless Crimeans came alongside a new main story chapter, one with five missions and plenty of actually engaging plot.

Of course a new story mission also means a host of other goodies, like extra orb missions and daily log-in bonuses:

But I would honestly argue that the plot for the “Diabolical Bloodline” chapter is really what should be drawing you in… If you’re into the plot of Fire Emblem Heroes like I am, at least.

Although, spoiler alert, this part of the plot has literally nothing to do with the new heroes despite taking place in their world. Just as a forewarning for anyone who was hoping to see the three newbies in their natural habitats.

This leg of the story begins fresh off the heels of Chapters 11 and 12 leading you through the world of Fire Emblem Echoes and culminating in the reveal that one of the archvillains, Prince Bruno, is actually the Order of Heroes’ missing friend Zacharias.

Pretty much right off the bat things jump into a hefty amount of exposition and backstory on Zacharias. It’s a lot all at once, arguably even overwhelmingly so from the way it comes out of nowhere, but at the same time it’s a very… Expected Fire Emblem backstory.

Evil dragons, harsh royal blood, puppet curses… Everything you’d expect to see in the plot of a Fire Emblem game. A safe choice in that respect, though they do go more personal with it.

 

I would say adding the details about his mother is just the kind of unexpected emotional whammy needed to build up some sympathy and intrigue in the character.

Beyond that, however, this chapter doesn’t offer much in terms of plot. Like I said before the three focus heroes show up as set pieces, but not a single one of them gets a line of dialogue. Not even the usual generic affair about there being a contract they need to follow.

I would say that’s the strangest part of this whole chapter, the general lack of use of other characters despite there being at least 5 missions to introduce Zacharias’ backstory and maybe even elaborate more on why the World of Radiance seems to be a favorite spot for him.

Though I could also argue that’s asking a lot for the plot of a mobile game that only periodically updates… So I digress.

The five missions in Chapter 13 weren’t necessarily all that engaging to me considering I haven’t spent any time in the world of the original games. Nothing stood out too specifically about the backgrounds or the music as a result, though I do enjoy the world theme for the levels.

I did also find it interesting to note that Chapter 13-5 uses Brave Ike rather than normal Ike. Can’t help but wonder whether that means Brave Ike ties in more with Path of Radiance, or if they simply wanted to shake things up considering the new summoning focus had no axe-wielders.

However, arguably Chapter 13-3 took the cake as being the most interesting of the five. It was the only level to include a “survive 7 turns” stipulation, but rather than just forcing you to take on an onslaught of generic enemies, the level actually introduced a brand new character into the mix:

Not only does the Black Knight look dope as hell, but his appearance adds an interesting element to the fight. He’s invincible thanks to the special Emblia’s Ward ability and rather high leveled even on the most basic difficulty setting, so the character acts like a check for being able to blow through the mission like it’s nothing.

Plus, it more or less tells us everything we need to know about Black Knight before he appears in some sort of Grand Hero Battle later on. A sword with distant counter, a more powerful version of the Luna special attack, a defense boost when he’s attacked and Wings of Mercy to jump to an ally when they’re damaged… I can already tell this guy is going to be pretty powerful, especially on my armor team with Amelia.

Even with that diversion out of the way, however, things quickly jump back into Zacharias and his own emotional dark god blood angst.

 


Defeat him here and you get to go into some conclusive details with him somewhat making up with the Order of Heroes but knowing he can’t come back because blah blah story continuity and necessary villain being necessary.

And, of course, things end off with a message for the player.

Pretty standard roll-credits stuff here, not gunna lie. Fairly well handled considering how long we’ve been invested in these characters now, but nothing Pulitzer Prize winning by any means.

Now we wait and see where things go next.


Well, looks like that about wraps things up for today’s Fire Emblem Heroes update. Just in time to make my video conference in a half hour too, conventionally enough.

My craziest Fire Emblem Heroes orb binge yet

A bit of a clickbait-y title this time around, but I would argue there’s no way to get around that in this case. This particular go around is rather crazy, if you ask me.

Though unfortunately my value for consistency in presentation is probably only going to add to the apparent hypocrisy of making this like dreaded clickbait, since I’ll be burying the lede at least a little bit under my usual character and story discussion/ramblings.

So for those of you who only see this cut-down synopsis on my branch-off to Facebook, I apologize ahead of time.

However… With that said, it’s time to get on with the show.


Today the developers at Intelligent Systems have blessed us with not just one, but TWO new summoning focuses themed after Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Each feature heroes from the separate armies of the game’s dual protagonists Alm and Celica.

And boy did they pick some great heroes to showcase with these focuses.

Seriously I’ve been excited all day knowing these heroes were coming soon, even though the first hint of them being in the game came from two videos that just showed up to give us about one day’s notice. Yet, that one day’s worth of hype has made me more amped to play Heroes than I’ve felt in months.



Editor’s Note: Yes, I do understand that my temporal perceptions probably sound confusing. In some cases I’m referring to ‘today’ as Thursday, July 13, when the focuses technically dropped. However, at the same time I’m referring to ‘today’ as Wednesday, July 12, since I’m having another case of ‘too excited about writing to sleep,’ which my brain is taking as a continuation of Wednesday even though it’s actually 1:30 a.m. or so on Thursday.

Just bear with me, I’ll try to make as much sense as possible given the aforementioned ‘writing at 1:30 a.m.’ barrier to cognizance.



Just which heroes have made me so giddy, you may ask?

Well I’ll tell you all about them my dear reader, using only the kind of over-excessive and flowery language that can come from someone who just recently played through the game featuring said characters, falling in love with them along the journey.

Alm’s Army

  • MathildaLegendary Knight
    • One of the founding knights of the Deliverance, a force fighting to preserve the land of Zofia in Fire Emblem Gaiden/Echoes. Mathilda is known for both her great combat proficiency and her adoration for the Deliverance’s first leader Clive, who she later marries in the game’s canon. To be honest, I found it a little strange to see that Mathilda was joining the fray rather than Clive, who is arguably a more important character to the story in Echoes… But that’s something I’m going to get into later.
    • Notable Skills: Mathilda comes with an anti-cavalry weapon, the Ridersbane, and a new skill called “Cancel Affinity” which not only negates abilities that increase an opponent’s strength in Fire Emblem’s token weapon triangle, but also reverses the effect of said granted strength. A pretty interesting idea.
  • GrayWry Comrade
    • One of the Ram Village villagers that starts the journey Alm embarks upon alongside Tobin, Faye and Kliff (who is so far the only one that hasn’t made an appearance, interestingly enough). Gray tends to come off as a bit of a womanizer, but he’s a stalwart ally for Alm who (in my time with the game) rode as a cavalier for the Deliverance that eventually comes to marry Clive’s sister Clair. To be honest, he’s my least favorite of Alm’s childhood friends… And my ambivalence kind of extends to this mobile title as well.
    • Notable Skills: Zanbato is a new weapon that only Gray has thus far in Heroes (as far as I can recall) which gives him anti-cavalry capabilities like Mathilda. His passive skills also grant him +6 speed when he has at least 3 more health than his opponent in combat and grant all other sword users twice their special points at the end of a battle.
  • DeltheaFree Spirit
    • Arguably a god amongst men, Delthea is a young girl from a forest village in Zofia who joined Alm’s quest after he (alongside her brother Luthier) saved her from working under the control of a servant of the Duma Faithful. She and her brother are the only two in their village graced with magical capabilities, and though Delthea’s power is the most potent, she tends to struggle internally with the idea of being seated with such a special status. Among Echoes players, it seems to be generally the consensus that Delthea is one of the most powerful units in the game. She seriously wrecks house, and that fact combined with the adorable depiction of her with a single sharp tooth showing and some reminders of my own relationship with my sister makes her one of my absolute favorite units.
    • Notable Skills: Where to start with Delthea… Not only does she herself come equipped with the skill “Death Blow,” instantly giving her +6 attack when she initiates combat, but her new weapon “Dark Aura” grants certain of adjacent allies +6 attack at the beginning of a turn AND her new skill “Drive Attack” grants allies within two spaces +3 attack when fighting. Delthea is kind of wild, and as I’m sure you can imagine will become relevant later in this post.

Celica’s Army

  • SaberDriven Mercenary
    • The first to join Celica’s quest to find the Mother Mila after she sets out from the Novis Island Priory, Saber is a mercenary who pledges to come along to help stave off pirates, but winds up sticking around for far longer than he bargains for. In fact, he winds up becoming one of Celica’s greatest advisors throughout the plot of the game, especially as choices become more difficult when they broach into his original home territory of Rigel. I like the guy, but not significantly so I’m afraid.
    • Notable Skills: Saber’s “Slaying Edge” grants him an ever coveted accelerated special attack cooldown on top of skills which grant him +4 HP, +2 speed and an even faster special cooldown for defensive special attacks, ones that trigger to do things like lower damage dealt by an opponent.
  • LeonTrue of Heart
    • Now here’s a man I can get behind. Leon is an archer who accompanies the knight Valbar when he goes to get revenge by killing the pirate king Barst. Clearly in love with the man, Leon continues to follow Valbar when he joins Celica in thanks for her helping to get revenge for his deceased family. Most of his character revolves solely around the idea of his unrequited love for the man whose tragic history left him separated from his first family, and it’s the kind of love that really melts my heart. So add on to that the fact that he can become a bow knight, probably my favorite Fire Emblem unit, and Leon skyrocketed to the top of my interests as a rather perfect storm of things I enjoy.
    • Notable Skills: Like Saber, Leon’s bow also accelerates special attack cooldowns and he gains +3 speed through a passive skill. He also has a new skill called “Guard” which lowers the special attack cooldown of enemy attacks provided he has over 80 percent health at the start of a battle, though this seems like a strange skill to give to archers, a typically non-defensive unit.
  • SonyaVengeful Mage
    • A powerful mage who joins Celica after she defeats the pirate leader Grieth in the deserts of Zofia… If you choose to let her live during a semi-critical junction in the game. Despite the fact that she is technically skippable, it’s implied that Sonya is the true ally meant to join Celica’s team due to her connections with the leader of the Duma Faithful and her strong mother-figure support with fellow Priory abandonee Genny. Just their connection to each other along gained Sonya some extra points in my book, as Genny was arguably my favorite unit in the game as a whole.
    • Notable Skills: Sonya has a pretty busted initial skill set as well between a weapon that adds damage to her special attacks, one of the most powerful and overused special skills in “Moonbow” and two passive skills that raise her attack and lower opponent’s magical resistances in cardinal directions at the start of each turn. Though I stand by Delthea having the craziest skill set, Sonya makes for a close second.

Whoo boy, hopefully that didn’t tire you all out, as there’s a lot more to go through from here. Hell, I haven’t even broached into the story behind how all these characters appear in the continuing Heroes plot line.

I’ll try to keep things brief and more picture-heavy, since I’m sure this much text is already burning everyone out as is.

This new story chapter, Bitter Enemies, begins as something of a direct continuation of the previous chapter. The Emblian prince Bruno made an appearance during the big battle with Celica’s forces in the “Rite of Shadows” chapter due to having some connection with Prince Alfonse and Princess Sharena’s missing friend.

Thus, since it was the last place he was seen, the Order of Heroes goes back to Valentia hoping to find him once again.

Once they arrive, the typical gambit of fighting through different battles with contracted heroes do occur…

However, the story around them has much less of a focus on the Valentian heroes than on Bruno, his increasingly mad and violent attitude and his overall connections with Zacharias.

The battles continue across Valentia until eventually the Order of Heroes encounters Bruno and his troops for one more big bout:

Once the fight ends, Alfonse has Bruno cornered and seems ready to end his life.

However… He stops when coming to a different conclusion:

And that’s it. The chapter ends on this exact image. Cliffhanger city.

While this chapter as a whole does add some nice drama to the overall experience, it admittedly leads to a conclusion that isn’t so surprising. My friends and I came to the conclusion that Bruno was probably going to be Zacharias since the game first came out and reached its release content ‘climax’ at Chapter 9.

One thing it does add that I personally love is a bunch of new Echoes maps, as the miniature recreations of original game locations continues to be one of my favorite things Fire Emblem Heroes nails every time.

The first four parts of this chapter are wonderful mimics of the Sluice Gate map where Alm frees Delthea, the Zofian coast map where Celica meets the Whitewing sisters, the map where Celica marches on Grieth’s Stronghold and the outside of the Temple of Mila.

I admittedly wasn’t able to immediately identify the fifth map as a recreation of anything specific, so it may just be a map created for Bruno’s big battle. Though if I’m wrong on that and you know what it’s meant to mimic, feel free to correct me.

Also interesting to note: I mentioned earlier that I was surprised to see Clive was not a hero we were able to summon, as instead we were given his love Mathilda. However, in the Grieth Stronghold siege map and in the final battle Clive does, in fact, appear.

If the two Mystery of the Emblem villains were any indication, Clive should likely appear as a Grand Hero Battle sometime soon. I’ve also heard talks that Berkut, one of the game’s antagonists (and one of my absolute favorite tragic characters) should also be making an appearance soon, so there’s always more to be excited about.

Even if I could argue that I enjoy seeing the new map layouts and new characters more than I enjoy getting story continuations in Heroes, at the very least I’ll definitely be interested to see where things go from here.

In this case five new orb-providing missions and a new chain challenge map set… Check.

Well then, I think that about gets the nitty gritty update information out of the way. Onto my personal experiences with this update.

I spent just about all day Wednesday hanging out with some of my close middle/high school friends, as we tend to do often given that we were so tightly knit and keep in contact to this day. It was a usual kind of hangout for us, plenty of video games and pizza to go around.

… Though this time we did play a round of Monopoly, where Juan (or cyv001 as you might remember from some of my earlier Sun and Moon build-up days, and whose blog I would still recommend seeing here) beat the absolute hell out of my friend Tiana and I. The angry words that were exchanged as he bankrupted us all more or less reaffirmed why we don’t play games like monopoly too often.

Anyway, one of the big highlights of the night came at midnight, when the new summoning focus banners rolled around. All of us but Juan in this group of friends play Heroes, so we were all pretty excited for the cool new heroes. Even if Jonathan, the one guy who plays mainstream Fire Emblem titles with me, did bring up a gripe that they’re dropping these heroes while still running the Summer hero banner. Having two completely new focuses kind of screwed him over due to the investment he’s made in trying to summon a Summer Robin, which is an issue I completely sympathize with from my own troubles with summoning orbs in the past.

This time around I had a huge surplus however, given that I’ve been saving them up for a rainy day. As I’m sure you all picked up from the amount of praise I heaped on Delthea earlier, she turned out to be my rainy day.

I felt about as excited seeing her appear as an obtainable unit as I believe I’ll feel whenever Neimi inevitably (crosses fingers) shows up, so I figured now would be as good a time as any to start blowing my riches from the past few months of storing like a squirrel for the winter.

Now for context, even after my last big orb binge to obtain Eldigan (which I mentioned briefly in this post), I was rather quickly able to grow my hoard back up to 200 orbs as you can see in this picture I took when I first got the update:

By the end of my time summoning on this one banner alone, here’s how many orbs I had left:

That’s right, I spent 140 orbs tonight. Granted, I didn’t have to spend any real money since I’ve just been saving for the last few months, but something about seeing all that hard work evaporate so quickly in one night felt… Dirty. For lack of a better term.

I’m strange like that when it comes to these games. Despite the fact that my friends were baffled at my ability to have so many orbs at once and the fact that I still have far more than them, internally I still feel like I’ve brought myself into the negative by getting rid of so much.

Still, that begs the question – Was the orb binge worth it even with the ‘dirty’ feelings I associate it with?

Well… Yes.

Yes it was.

Not only did I manage to summon Delthea, my major goal across both of the new banners, but along the way I was also able to summon a five star Catria, my personal favorite of the three Whitewings.

In a way that’s almost more crazy and ironic considering Catria and her sisters appear as characters in Fire Emblem Echoes as visitors from Archanea. Thus, even though she wasn’t a banner focus like Delthea, I was able to get two different five star blue units from Echoes.

On top of that I also managed to build up a hell of a backlog of other new blue units by only activating blue summoning orbs when I saw them:

I wound up summoning so many blue units that I actually had to trade away a bunch of my units for the first time to make room for more.

While most of what I got is some basic tribute fodder, some stand-out units I received included female Corrin, Lukas, male Robin and Roderick. All of them were brand new to me and help to fill the complete log of units I’ve received, even if Delthea and Catria are going to be the main two I use for bolstering my usable blue unit category.

Now my sights are set for Leon and Sonya in Celica’s Army, as Leon is one of my favorite units and Sonya seems like she has quite a bit of power behind her. Though I’ll probably be more sparing about how I administer my orbs going forward for a little while, so who knows how that will go.

You’d think that would be all I would have to say on the matter, but if that’s the case,you clearly haven’t spent enough time watching me ramble on about video games before. Because there’s definitely more.

After all, I wasn’t the only one summoning heroes tonight.

That’s right, not only did I receive a Delthea, but so did my friend Tiana (in the middle) and my other friend who asked not to be named around these parts (on the left). They got theirs with far less effort than I did, and in fact my unnamed friend also got a Mathilda in the same summoning batch, but either way we all bonded as Delthea owners the first night she became available.

So far the only one who hasn’t gotten a Delthea is my friend Jonathan, though with two weeks left we’re all rooting for him and his summoning success. After all, he’s destined to join the Delthea squad with the rest of us.

Until he does, however… This night will go down in infamy as the spawn of a brand new group-wide meme.

NOW that should be everything I have to blather on about for Fire Emblem Heroes tonight.

I won’t bother boring you all with further details on the new card pack that came out in Duel Links or with any extensive updates on my sunburn (which is starting to peel) or even my recent work experiences (such as driving out to Fullerton to cover a CSUF GOP meeting with my friend and now Editor in Chief Zack), as I’m sure you’re all tired of hearing me write tonight.

Also because it’s significantly later now than I indicated it was at the top of this post and I’ve legitimately become exhausted. Guess the only things I’m expecting to see on my calendar tomorrow are sleeping late and cleaning the downstairs bathroom.

… Today? Definitely today at this point, even if it feels like it should be tomorrow since I have’t slept yet. Perceptions of time and relativity really are a confusing subject matter on little-to-no-rest after a day partying with friends.

So, to save myself from endlessly rambling any more tonight in place of getting the sleep I need, I’ll leave off with this.
